On Trevor's birthday, way back in July, I gave him a world map from IKEA. He loves maps and has always wanted a big one in our house. We hung it on a big open wall in our basement.
We had a Family Home Evening where we talked about missionary work and the importance of it. We talked about how our family wouldn't exist if missionaries hadn't served in the Ventura California mission way back in the day. We talked about how missionary work is a tradition in the Allred family and how many of our relatives have served and served faithfully.
We then marked every mission served in our family from Grandpa on down. We have a total of 60 pins in our map. Three from the Fuehrer side, thanks to my brother in laws, and 57 from Trevor's side. We laughed as we put Trevor's pin in so close to his home state. We marveled at some of the missions so foreign and so far from home. We squeezed 5 pins into the same mission in Germany. We noted that we have missions in every continent except Africa. We felt a deep love and gratitude for all of our family members and their great examples and their service. We hoped that the message would sink in.
The message being that missionary work is so important. That missionary work is what the Allreds do. The world needs His truth and it will be these future missionaries who will bring it to them no matter where they are called because, well, because it is in their blood. And we are greatly looking forward to the day when we stick 4 (or more) of our own pins into our missionary map. We are as the armies of Helaman.
We will be the Lord's missionaries.
We'll bring the world His truth!
